A Big Fat Zero

One day my then 7-year-old grandson came home from school and told me, “A girl in my class called me a big, fat zero, Grandma.”

I gathered Jarod into my arms and said, “She’s wrong.  Don’t you believe her.  You are a bright, funny, incredible kid, and so very much loved.  In my world and your grandpa’s world you are not a zero, but number one!)

It wasn’t until later after he went home that I did the math. “A zero is only a zero when it stands alone.  With the one by its side, it becomes a perfect ten.  And when you have a friend, even is if he’s a zero too, together you gain the power of one hundred.

Too many people think of themselves big, fat, zeros–nobodies.   But as Paul quotes from Hosea in Romans 9, Message paraphrase, God says, “I’ll call nobodies and make them somebodies; I’ll call the unloved and make them My beloved.  In the place where they yell,’You’re nobody,’ they’re calling you God’s living children.”  What can be better than that?

What they don’t realize is the world’s nobodies are listed in God’s Hall of Fame and can be found on Heaven’s Ancestry.com for the entire universe to see.  So the next time you are tempted to think of yourself as less than a VIP or someone calls you a big, fat, zero, remember standing beside the one true God of love, you are automatically a perfect ten! Can’t ask for more than that.
