Word Play

Lexiconers and linguists have declared the the two most beautiful words in the English language are cellar door.  Cellar door does nothing for me-as a person who loves words, the sound, the smell, the taste of words.  For instance I like to roll the word hyperbole around on my tongue just for the sensation.  I also enjoy the rhythm of Spanish inspired town names like Escondido and Atascadero.  And who doesn’t enjoy the experience from saying the name of Hawaii’s Queen Lill’uokulani?  Beyond momentary pleasurable sensation, words guaranteed to touch my heart are ‘I love you,’ and ‘I forgive you.’  Another word that brings incredible joy to one’s heart is ‘benign.’

This morning I found another word that fills my heart with unbelievable pleasure--delight.  According to Webster’s Dictionary, delight means a ‘high degree of gratification; extreme satisfaction; great pleasure.  OK, so what makes the word delight leap into my top ten favorite words of all time.  Zephaniah 3:17 NIV says, “The Lord your God is with you, Hs is mighty to save.  He will take great delight in you; He will quiet you with His love, He will rejoice over you with singing.”

He delights me me?  I know I delight in Him but He delights in me?  He experiences a high degree of gratification in me?  He finds extreme satisfaction in His daughter, the one with the runny nose, messy hair and skinned knees?    He feels great pleasure when He’s with me (which is all the time I might add.)

Why?  King David, the murderer, the schemer and adulterer,  asked that same question.  (Psalms 8) It’s simple to write yet too profound for me to understand.  He loves me.  He loves me!  His delight in me springs from His love for me.  Like a new parent, He delights in every gurgle, every smile, every word I lisp toward Him.  And like a Father, when I’m agitated and fearful, He quiets me with His love and sings over me–happy songs, lullabies, even the occasional sad song that touches my heart and leads me to ask for forgiveness.

Yeah!  I like that I delight my Daddy.  How do I know?  Because God’s delight is my birthright.  Yours too.
