No Fear!

What would you do if you had no fear?  Wow!  That’s a tuffy.  I think I’d start with parasailing or hang-gliding.  My first adventure in flight came when I was five.  I truly believed I could fly.  I couldn’t. I fell face first down a flight of stairs.  I tried twice again during my childhood with the help of one of my mother’s sheets as a parachute–no gain, just pain!   As I grew older Psalm 139:9 became a favorite of mine.  “If I rise on the wings of the dawn, You are there.”  Today I fly via commercial airlines.

To drive the ‘Pan American Highway’ is also on my ‘no fear’ list.  The fear of violence from drug cartels and other criminal elements holds me back.  Visiting exotic locales like Casablanca, Alexandria and the Middle East fall under the same fear.

At one point writing a book was on my ‘no fear’ list.  I told a magazine editor that I could write a short story but never an entire book until I discovered the promise, “I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me.” Philippians 4:13 NIV.  Fifty books later, that ‘fear’ no longer exists.  I’ve learned that when God’s plans for me override my list of fears, nothing and no one can stop me.  I tell wannabe authors that if God is urging you to write, then write.  Will you get rejections, you betcha!  But those rejections will force you to get better at telling your story.

Today my ‘no fear’ list includes helping to relieve hunger, especially for children; human trafficking in the U.S.;  and rescuing abused children.  I know that if I open my heart and my pocketbook to these causes, God will work through me.  But the problems are too big, what can I do?   Mother Theresa said when someone challenged her with “What can you, a tiny woman, expect to accomplish for the poor of Calcutta?”  She answered, “About as much as a mosquito can disturb your slumber in your bedroom at night.  It can keep you from getting a good night’s sleep until you do something about it.”

If you truly believed the promise, “I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength,” what big thing would you tackle?”  What little thing can you do to add zest to your life and to the lives of others?  Make a list of five ‘no fears’ and then, go ahead.  Dare to defeat your fears and, in the process, maybe even change your world.
