I Don’t Do Ball Games!

I don’t do ballgames because of all the hypocrites screaming and shouting and cheering for a team they really don’t care anything about.  When they leave the stadium they won’t give the players another thought.  Many persons seated in the bleachers do not even like baseball.  Some attend to please a family member or friend.  Some attend to use their free passes.  Some attend out of habit.  And some want to be videoed by the sky cam, or whatever they call the audience scanner.  Now I do love a good baseball game, but I know that many of the fans in the stadium are pretenders.  All for show.  That’s why I don’t do ball games.

As much as I love music, I don’t attend classical concerts either.  You wouldn’t believe how many Pharisees I’ve spotted in the audience.  Some are sleeping, others are spaced out with dumb smiles on their faces, their minds on tomorrow’s obligations.  And you can’t miss the husbands who’ve been dragged to the theater by wives intent of adding a note of civility to their mates. Some are playing video games.   As if no one can tell they are hating every minute from the orchestra’s first overture to the finale!  Other fakes swish about showing off their fancy duds and expensive jewelry.  And then there are the bigots who ‘ooh and ah’ at the correct moments to impress the ‘correct’ people. None of them fool me!   If the truth be known, this bunch of charlatans would rather attend a Bruce Springsteen concert than a Vivaldi recital.

I hope my opinions don’t offend anyone, but tell me, why would I choose to sit beside a bigot or a sophist at any event?  How could I possibly enjoy an eleventh inning squeaker ballgame knowing a pseudo-sport’s enthusiast is two seats away from me?  And how could I concentrate on the creative interpretation of my favorite piece of music seeing another concertgoer check his watch every five minutes?  No!  Ballgames and concerts are not for me!

All right, before you hit your escape key, continue reading.  People spout all kinds of reasons for not attending church.  The most common excuses focus on the other worshippers.  Yet I don’t know too many sports nuts who would pass on free tickets to see their favorite team play in either the Superbowl or the World Series.  And an evening of classical music performed by one’s favorite symphony would entice any genuine music connoisseur.  And yet when it comes to church attendance, there’s a much more important reason.  I have an example to follow.   Luke 4:16-22 tells me Jesus attended church. He worshipped with all kinds of phonies, hypocrites, and charlatans.  The author of Hebrews 10:25 NIV  says, “Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing…”

Church attendance is so much more than merely ‘enjoying the show’.  ‘Come let us bow down in worship, let us kneel before the Lord, our Maker; for He is our God and we are the people of His pasture, the flock under His care.’ Psalm 95:6 NIV.  Together we honor Him; together we glorify His Holy Name.  See you in church this week…
