No Fear!

People go to horror movies to feel the thrill of adrenalin coursing through the veins or the temporary chill of fear.  Recently a group of movie goers experienced real terror at a theater.  I can’t imagine what it must have been like trapped in that room with an enraged killer.  In that situation I’m not sure I would remember to claim all the promises God has made regarding no fear.

I was flying out of San Francisco a few years back (not on a broom but on a jet) when one of the engines out side my window exploded just as the plane’s front wheels lifted off the tarmac.  I noticed that the passengers around me immediately began praying aloud or ha assumed the crash-landing position.  (I’m a writer–I observe people for a living.) An 80+ year old grandma sitting beside me sat passively watching the fire flaming from the engine.  I glanced at her and smiled.  She smiled in return and said, “I can tell you’re a believer, aren’t you?  You’re not afraid either.  We both know where we’re headed.”

She was right.  I hadn’t taken the time to be afraid.  Perfect love casts out fear; My peace I leave with you… be not afraid; Do not fear for I am with you: He delivered me from all my fears.  The list goes on… “Lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the world…”  Both my seat mate and I knew we would not face our ends alone without God, regardless of how our adventure ended.  As it turned out, the captain settled the plane roughly back on the ground and then in a calm, monotone, announced, “Ladies and gentlemen, we are experiencing some technical difficulties and are are taxiing back to the terminal.”

Technical difficulties, life is full of technical difficulties whether it be senseless tragedies, political lies and Satanic subterfuge, financial losses, chronic illness; seemingly disastrous upheavals in churches and dissolution of families.  The world is in a turmoil, admit it.  But be of good cheer.  This is the best news yet.  There is nothing to fear unless we forget God’s promises and how He has led us in the past. God said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”  Heb. 13:5.  How bad can things be! The good news is, we’re one step closer to Christ’s return than we were yesterday. Have no fear!  God’s perfect love covers it all.
