Crushed Hearts and Shattered Dreams

Seven years ago an excited young man danced up and down on Oprah Winfrey’s couch and declared his love for his dark-eyed beauty of a bride.  The tabloids ate it up.  Today the same supermarket magazines are reporting in blazing headlines the demise of the marriage.

Reminds me of a story about an architect hired by the Shah of Iran to design and construct a ballroom that would rivaled Versailles’s Hall of Mirrors.  When the massive diamond-backed mirrors were shipped from a factory in the west and the crates were opened, the designer found every mirror was broken–shattered to pieces.  Having cost millions of dollars, he knew the Shan would be furious.  (And no one wanted to risk the wrath of the Shaw.) What could the designer do? Instead of scrapping the entire lot of broken shards, he pieced them together and glued them onto the plastered walls, creating an exquisite, one of a kind, light-captivating mosaic off which the light from the crystal chandeliers dazzled, surrounded and engulfed the viewers.

It would be easy to write off the Cruz tragedy as, “just another Hollywood marriage gone bad.”  Try telling that to the couple’s innocent, young daughter.  Her life is, like the Shaw’s mirrors, is in shambles.  Three lives, and who knows how many others have been decimated by this tragedy?  While this family is but one of millions of American marriages going through similar circumstances, to Katie, Seri and Tom, the pain and broken dreams are individually personal.  For the Cruz’s and for all the other crushed, hurting hearts, read the words from a king who lived millenniums ago.  He understood their pain when he wrote, “He [God] heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds. Great is our Lord and mighty in power; His understanding has no limit.” Psalm 147:3,5

Today, as you worship your loving God, pray for this family and for all of the other hearts who are crashing into chards.  The Great Architect, who designed the stars;  the Creator who built the mountains and directed the course of the seas, is eager to turn the broken dreams of the Cruz family into monuments of stunning beauty.  He is no less eager to do the same for you and those you love.  Give Him all the pieces of your heart and ask Him to turn your life in a beautiful and exquisite work of art that will glorify His name.
