Way to Go!

“If you had your life to live over, what would you change?”  When Richard and I quit teaching in Christians school we both felt as though we’d been put out to pasture, that God no longer needed our services, that the rest of our lives would be of little value to our Savior.  Twenty years later we can clearly see God didn’t put us out to pasture.  He simply gave us each new and exciting missions.  And you know what? I wouldn’t change a thing.  (OK, I do wish I knew when to keep my mouth shut before I speak instead of regretting my words afterwards. )

The last year of my 89-year-old mother’s life, she was bedridden.  A talented and energetic woman, Mom believed God had put her out to pasture. Once when she was complaining about still being alive, I reminded her, “Remember all the people for whom you promised to pray, but were too busy at the time or forgot?  Now God is giving you time to pray for them 24/7 if you like.”

I’m not being flippant about age or illness, but God does have a plan for you (See Jeremiah 29:11).  If you’re aging and your strength is failing; if you’re bedridden and feel like a burden to those around you; and you wish God would simply lay you to rest, remember the words of philosopher Richard Bach. ” There’s a test to determine whether your mission on earth is finished.  If you’re alive, it isn’t!”

I like that.  When my time comes, I want to go out swinging!  Paul put it this way, “I have fought a good fight; I have finished the course; I have kept the faith…” 2 Timothy 4:7 NIV  Yeah, that’s the way I want to go!
