An Apology

Lord, I apologize for blaming You for the bad things that happen in this world.  Hurricanes, famines, earthquakes, tsunamis, fires, plane crashes, cancer, death–the list goes on and on and on.”  Since time began religionists have pointed at every natural and not-so-natural disaster as evidence of Your displeasure. That’s so wrong!

James 1:17 says, “Every good and perfect gift comes down from the Father of Lights…”  All that is good in my life comes from You–my hubby, my home, my children, my grand babies, my no-longer-aching back, my talents as they may be.  Even the things that may seem bad when they happen work out for good when I leave them in Your loving hands.

You have every right to be exasperated with mankind’s stubbornness; with mankind’s disregard for the needs of others; with mankind’s desire to own more “stuff”.  As entire generations of East African children die from lack of food and clean drinking water;  as thousands are murdered in the wars sweeping across the nations of the Middle East; as a party that allows one in four American children to go to bed hungry every night; You have every right to be disgusted with mankind’s blatant disregard of the suffering of others.

It’s easy to sit in my padded leather chair, at my mahogany desk, in a climate-controlled office; with my cat snoozing at my feet and point fingers.  It’s easy to level the blame for all of the earth’s tragedies as evidence of Your vengeance for mankind’s misdeeds, with the exception of me, of course.  It’s the other guy that has You riled enough to kill, maim and destroy.  Pointing my finger and clicking my tongue at another’s suffering due to their evil deeds, yes, that okay.   My sins are minuscule in comparison.

Besides, if I blame God for carrying out these disasters it let’s me off the hook, right?  Who am I to go to the aid of sinners deservedly  suffering God’s wrath?  Right?

“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”  Romans 3:23 NIV
